China’s Shanghai Huayi Acrylic Acid plans to start up a 320,000 tonne/year acrylic acid (AA) facility in Caojing, Shanghai, in 2015, a company source said on Tuesday.

A 160,000 tonne/year line at the facility will begin operations in early 2015, while the second line of a similar capacity will start up in the second half, she said.

The company’s existing 230,000 tonnes/year AA plant at Gaoqiao, Shanghai, will eventually be shut permanently to free up the land for alternative uses but a specific timeline has yet to be set, she said.

A 40,000 tonne/year line at the Gaoqiao plant has been offline since June following an explosion, according to the source.

The other three lines at the Gaoqiao plant that are currently operating have a combined capacity of 190,000 tonnes/year, the source added.
