Mission

The aim of the Mechanical and Chemical Resistance Laboratory is to support requesters in studying and solving problems related to the mechanical characterization of materials and to their resistance when exposed to chemical, thermal and weathering treatments.

In the laboratory we perform different mechanical tests, immersions in harsh chemicals up to high temperatures and pressures, and weathering ageings.

The purpose of the laboratory is:

  • to have a thorough mechanical investigation of the materials, including the generation of data for design engineering;

  • to get information about the actual performance of the materials in the real application environments by properly simulating ageing conditions.

The customers of the laboratory are both CTD (Customer Technical Development) and R&I (Research and Innovation).

To guarantee the validity of the results, the laboratory participates in quarterly global cross-check with other Solvay labs on tensile, flexural and impact tests.

Techniques

  • Quasi static mechanical tests (tensile, flexural, compression, …)
  • Impact tests
  • Long term mechanical tests (Creep, Flex Life)
  • Abrasion
  • Immersion tests
  • Permeation tests
  • Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance (ESCR)
  • Weathering
