Employers are required to ensure that each hazmat employee is trained. Hazmat employee training must include the following:
- General awareness/familiarization training;
- Function-specific training (includes modal training);
- Safety training;
- Security awareness training;
- In-depth security training.
All employees involved in the handling, preparation and transportation of hazardous materials must receive training; this includes administrative personnel if they perform any function regulated by the US DOT (such as signing shipping papers).

Per the Solvay HazMat Employee Training Guideline, you may also utilize the PHMSA On-Line Training modules for training on the Hazardous Material Table, Shipping Papers, Marking & Labeling, Placarding, and Packaging. You cannot use the PHMSA On-Line training modules to comply with more specialized training requirements such as bulk loading & unloading, portable tank and special permit training.
