Initiative name ID Provided by DT PMO | Calculate & share Product Carbon Footprint with Solvay’s clients | |||
Description of the initiative | Explain the context and the initiative ( Current situation, Linked to others initiatives, pre-requisites) Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) represent the CO2 emitted to manufacture our products, from cradle to gate. PCF are frequently requested by our customers, we estimate that we received about 500 requests in 2021. 107 of them were transferred to the LCA expert for support. The others were managed directly by the GBUs either because the data was available to them or because they didn’t prioritize the request due to limited budget. PCF are currently being extracted from Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA are performed by LCA experts, who are part of R&I, by using a specialized software called Simapro. Performing a LCA from scratch can take 15 days to 4 months, and updating it with fresh data 4 hours to 15 days. The most time consuming tasks are:
The LCA expert team count 5 members and also rely on 2 temp contractors to handle the demands. What justifies the existence of this Initiative? ‘including Group program link With it’s program Solvay One Planet, Solvay has set ten ambitious targets to drive progress across three key pillars: climate, resources and better life. Reducing our greenhouse gas is the first of these 10 targets, Solvay is committed to zero emissions in 2040 (2050 for SA&D) in our scopes 1 and 2, meaning emissions of our own operations. What are the prerequisites? The methodology to calculate the PCF remains unclear, many standards exist. An alignment between chemical companies on the PCF calculation methods is required, and later on alignment on data sharing principles. This alignment is the deliverable expected from Together for Sustainability and WBCSD workstreams. Understand: Why is this initiative proposed? What are the consequences if not done? What are the new capabilities expected?

|
* Why is this initiative proposed today?
Explain what are the motivations and the expected objective behind this initiative/ what are the consequences if not done?
The demands from our clients have more than tripled in 2021 (107 demands vs. 30 in 2020) and will continue to accelerate in 2022 as the industry is structuring itself within WBCSD, TfS, Catena-X and other initiatives. Early 2023 all TfS members will request PCF from their suppliers. They represent 8.5% of our sales and 1365 products, and many other clients will do the same. To handle these requests with the current process, the size of the LCA experts team would have to be multiplied by 10, and the delay to answer to the clients would not be improved due to low data availability. Due to this situation, automation of this process is required. |
What are the new capabilities expected?
The expected objective is to be able to calculate & share PCF with all our customers requiring this information as soon as 2022 for a first limited scope, and as soon as 2023 for the whole portfolio of Solvay. With this new solution we will be able to :
|
What will it replace? Is it a new solution or an existing one?
Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) are currently being extracted from Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA are performed manually by LCA experts, who are part of R&I, by using a specialized software called Simapro. |
Who are the future users?
Identify the future users (BU, sites...) and population concerned
SD Champions, SD directors, SD team members, R&I LCA team members |
What is the number of users impacted?
| Around 100 |
What about the Business Needs?
What is the value of the initiative?
Financial Business expectation (ROI, benefits, savings,...) + Qualitative Business expectation (business value, market fit, visibility,...)
|
How does the product / deliverable align with the business goals?
Are there any challenges in developing the product?
How will we measure success?
Please duplicate this template in this folder. Then, for the envision phase, answer to the 7 high-level questions in the "Security Scoring" sheet. These questions will help the SIP team to determine the level of cybersecurity & compliance support you will need. Please contact the team by email: @SIP_team@solvay.com
If not able to answer yet, explain it at the Envision gate and it will be the DTLT to decide if green light or not considering with the high level of uncertainty

Do you think if your initiative is compatible with a waterfall approachor with an agile approach?
|
If the initiative will be done in Agile methodology, please contact during the strategize phase Nicolas LOVAGNINI
Understand: How this bring value? Which pain points will it removes? Will it be delivered in Agile or Waterfall?

What is the qualitative assessment of Hardware/ Data processing/ Project’s contribution to Solvay One Planet?
- Is the business ambition you will support improving or not sustainability? - Will you increase or decrease the number of hardware we need to operate? How much ? - Will you generate or transfer an important amount of data, especially videos? How much? |
