What is my role in Employee Development?

WHY THIS MOMENT MATTERS

Development of your team is one of the key aspects of your role as a Leader. Although the employee remains in the driving seat for their own development, you enable them to identify and seize the right opportunities for their holistic development. Development of your team means better performance that leads to growth for both Solvay and your team.

WHAT TO DO AS A LEADER

  • Develop a deep understanding of each member of your team including the areas they need to develop capabilities and skills in;
  • Identify challenging projects and work to accelerate their development;
  • Understand their career aspirations looking 1, 3 & 5 years out.  Coach them if they aren’t sure or clear and help them develop career goals;
  • Have regular conversations that are not just focused on their objectives but also on their development;
  • Provide clear & actionable feedback on what they are doing well and what they need to do better;
  • Leverage your network to make connections and expose them to other GBUs and Functions that match their career goals;
  • Keep track of available resources and future opportunities for yourself and your team.
  • Development of employees is a critical part of the leader’s role.  Guidance on how to coach and provide professional development for your team member is available in the Career Catalyst for Managers guide.
  • Coaching not only represents the relationship between a Coach and Coachee : it is also a leadership style which can be acquired and used by leaders in the development of people in their teams for greater engagement and performance to achieve goals and objectives.
