Purpose

The scrum master ensures the scrum framework is followed. Scrum has a clearly defined set of roles and rituals that should be followed and the scrum master works with each member of the scrum team to guide and coach the team through the scrum framework.


Key accountabilities

  • Promotes and advocates Agile values and principles within the team and across different teams that collaborate
  • Enables close cooperation with stakeholders as requested or needed
  • Supports the product owner with backlog management ensuring that the team has the items ready, refined, prioritized and measured
  • Influences the removal of impediments to the Scrum Team’s progress (e.g. risks, dependencies)
  • Ensures consistency in the sprint reviews and definition of done across all scrum/virtual teams of the ART, according to ART guidelines
  • Monitors and reports the team's progress towards the commitments.  Scrum masters ensure all team members and stakeholders understand the sprint goal progress
  • Facilitates the stand-ups, sprint planning, sprint reviews and retrospectives for the scrum team under his/her responsibility
  • Promotes and encourages knowledge sharing within the scrum team and within ART
  • Contributes in resource capacity planning, highlighting specific needs to improve team's  performance 

Who should hold the position?

The ART Scrum Master should have a solid scrum background and a strong Agile experience.

The position requires very good soft skills, especially communication, conflict management and influencing skills.

Skill needed

  • Scrum masters must exhibit leadership qualities without being authoritative. They lead by serving the team and facilitating their self-organization
  • Promotes clear, productive interactions and transparency with the different  stakeholders  
  • Must be able to animate and facilitate discussions, workshops, brainstorms... by different approaches. Encourage the flow of information and creativity between individuals and through the team and ART
  • Must be aware to coordinate and anticipate potential issues as they arise, coordinating their solving with the teams[s] (even outside the squad) and elevate them to management if needed
  • Is able to manage conflicts or setbacks within the team and foster an environment of open discussion and trust
