SABIC has declared force majeure on butadiene (BD) supplies produced at its Geleen unit in the Netherlands, a company source said on Thursday.

“We experienced some technical issues over the weekend [8-9 March], which led to the production of off-spec BD,” the source said, adding, “we are running but at significantly reduced rates.”

The source said that force majeure letters had been sent to all customers as it was unable to fulfill all contractual obligations.

The source said the issue was a minor one and that on spec BD production would be resumed by 1 April at the latest.

The unit has the capacity to produce 130,000 tonnes/year of BD.
