Biodiversity
Introduction
Biodiversity needs to be addressed locally to respond to external stakeholder’s expectations, to Environmental Regulations and to initiate “Nature positive projects”.
This standards provides us with an approach to:
- Define the baseline regarding Biodiversity status in and around the site by
- Using existing environmental studies
- Running GIS tools (e.g. the IBAT tool developed by IUCN) to evaluate biodiversity importance and identifying potential risks and main levers
- Identify priority levers to work with and associations, local communities which might contribute
- Measure local impact of the site on the basis of the environmental reporting
- Develop “Nature positive projects” and look for international certification / recognition
Requirements
Some requirements are needed before starting working on this project:
- IBAT tool subscription at Corporate level (SD) - More on IBAT tool here
- Development of the method to measure local impact on biodiversity at site level (R&I LCA method and environmental reporting information used as input data)
- A “champion” on biodiversity at site level who can organize his/her own network
- Close connections between SD / GBU champion / site Biodiversity champion
- Basic training on Biodiversity for all employees, intermediate training for SD champion, site manager, SD site correspondent, advanced training for the Biodiversity champion
Impact
Following such standard will lead to several impacts:
- Certification by international organizations and nature associations (e.g; Nature based Solution by IUCN, Wildlife Habitat Council…)
- Integration of the plant into local communities and nature preservation associations
- Improved Reputational / image (e.g., rating agencies and customers)
- Results can be reported in the annual report and in rating agencies questionnaires
