Application Summary
The Product Carbon Footprint calculation refers to the measurement and assessment of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the entire life cycle of a specific product. This calculation takes into account the emissions generated during the extraction of raw materials, manufacturing processes, transportation, use, and disposal of the product.
The Product carbon footprint application aims to automate the PCF calculation for all product that are part of the Company portfolio and other relevant KPIs.
Application - Delivered Business Value
Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) represent the CO2 emitted to manufacture our products, from cradle to gate. PCF are frequently requested by our customers, we estimate that we received about 500 requests in 2021. 107 of them were transferred to the LCA expert for support. The others were managed directly by the GBUs either because the data was available to them or because they didn’t prioritize the request due to limited budget. PCF are currently being extracted from Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA are performed by LCA experts, who are part of R&I. Performing a LCA from scratch can take 15 days to 4 months, and updating it with fresh data 4 hours to 15 days.
Due to this situation, automation of this process is required. The aims are:
1/Automate PCF data collection,
2/Calculate of PCF automatically,
3/Integrate suppliers’ PCF
4/Share PCF with our clients
Solvay is committed to reducing its CO2 output, and provide a PCF for every product produce by the company will become a legal requirement.
In addition, PCFs are becoming competitive advantages for both suppliers and customers, all players challenge themselves on these data in order to reach their carbon neutrality objectives.
Application Scope
The project focuses on the Novecare GBU only, for a product portfolio identified as simple.
Two dashboards are available:
PCF Standard Users contains only data validated by PCF process owner. The data are ready to be shared.
PCF Advanced Users contains all data generated by the automated calculation, with scopes detailed breakdowns.
The project team is working in a fully Agile mode, currently in PI#7, product version v4.0.
