Purpose :

The purpose of the Data Catalog is to identify business (data) objects, provide definitions and the table used to store it in the Data Ocean. It will also categorize data into different domains.

Having the Data Catalog will help  the Data Governance team enlarge the coverage of data ownership of business (data) objects, with direct access to the information related to where it is stored.

The intention is that LeanIX will be the master for all the business (data) objects, their definitions, ownership.  Once this is in place, the process for synchronising Data Catalog and LeanIX will be defined.

How to document the Data Catalog :

The Data Catalog has:

  1. Data Domain, Business (Data) Object, Business (Data) Object definition, Data Object Source
  • Maintained/defined by Data Analyst
  • Data analyst along with PO / business defines the business objects and then with help of DG they categorize it into the domain.

Data Object Source: This indicates where the names and definition were derived, eg by data owner, by Product team, from SAP. This is needed for the transfer to LEANIX.

  1. Tables for the Object (DM Tables), Business Object Parent : documented/defined by Data architect
  • Once the Business object, its definition and domain are defined, the Data Architect can input following information in the columns.
  • Exception: For cases where the tables exist and are being migrated, then tables can be added by the Data Architect without the business (data) objects.
  1. Tables for the Object (DM Tables): Document the table associated with it.
  2. Business Object Parent: Here parent business object name should be maintained, if applicable.
  • For example business object Material Group, the parent business object would be Material etc.
  1. Contributors : Data Analyst and Data Architect add their names to identify who has updated a particular line of entries. The purpose is to enable progress monitoring by the individuals involved to ensure completeness of the Data Catalog for all Products using Data Ocean.

Use of Data catalog :

This data catalog will be used

  • To document which tables have been added to the Data Ocean and to show which domain they are assigned to.
  • To prepare business (data) objects and their associated data for upload to LeanIX as it becomes the master source for business (data) objects.
