iPaaS Extended Study

Description of the initiative

In order to efficiently apply its integration strategy, Solvay needed to adopt the good iPaaS solution. While SAP Cloud Platform Integration is currently used for specific integration purposes, no proper iPaaS study has been done to assess the available solutions on the market (rejected several times since last 2 yrs during budget review). As the integration strategy accelerates and with looming PO2 separation, it becomes urgent to perform the study to identify an adequate iPaaS solution soon.

  • a good iPaaS solution can help future companies to improve agility, reduce running costs and enhance productivity.
  • Estimated Budget 80K EUR

Roadmap & Key objectives

Roadmap

2023 Digital Technology Key objective

Protect the business

Priority

P1

Phase 1: Envision - High level initiatives

Do

  • Create Envision brief if the initiative is part of the validated roadmap

  • Highlight roadmap value
  • Request a budget for Strategize if you need one
  • Security scoring
  • RADAR/SENTRI

Don´t

  • Request platform resources if the business capability is already identified and clear
  • Write portfolio epics, epics and user stories
  • Identify squad resources

First, let´s start with the Problem space

1.1. Reason

* Why is this initiative proposed today?

Application Integration needs have greatly evolved since the implementation of the first solution at Solvay. Those needs have followed the fundamental change in the application landscape to be integrated, moving towards a more decentralized and cloud-based architecture. It has increased the need for more scalability, flexibility, and agility in order to prevent integration being a bottleneck.

To adapt to this change, a new integration strategy has recently been worked on at Solvay (“API first, iPaaS second, ESB otherwise”).

Furthermore, as the market for Integration platforms has evolved accordingly, a project for an iPaaS study* has been proposed but rejected due to budget considerations, then due to PO2 frozen activities.

More recently, an additional need coming from the work related to the TOM integration architecture for ECo and SCo, has emerged: to leverage the iPaaS Discovery initiative in order to validate and complement the TOM recommendations for Integration. The project can thus be considered as a follow-up of that work.

1.2. Benefits

What are the new capabilities expected?

The objectives of the study are :

  • to identify the best solutions to be part of the ECo/SCo respective integration platforms, and bring the information that the future DT LT teams will need to take an informed decision about the TOM architectures for integration.
  • to design adapted governance models best fitting the proposed integration platforms and aligned with both companies attributes.
  • to assess ease of use, as different solutions have different interfaces and levels of complexity
  • to evaluate the cost - as solutions can vary in terms of pricing, with different providers offering different pricing models and subscription plans.
  • to identify potential limitations,  any potential limitations or drawbacks of different solutions, such as limited integration capabilities (ex: BPMS) or lack of support for certain applications or systems

What will it replace? Is it a new solution or an existing one?

This current initiative will not replace any existing solution but to do a Study and come up with a proposed new Integrated solution for future companies ECO and SCO , which will be separated projects.

1.3. Target users

Who are the future users?

This study project will consider the requirements/dependencies  of all GBUs - however NO application change/Solution will be implemented as part of this Study initiative.

What is the number of users impacted?

0

What about the Business Needs?

1.4. Value proposition

What is the value of the initiative?

The project will put the ECo and SCo DT LT teams in a good position to take the decisions related to the TOM integration architectures, and start implementing them as soon as the future DT LT teams are in place.

1.5. Business goals

How does the product / deliverable align with the business goals?

In the context of PO2, it is imperative that future independent companies may want to look for alternatives to webMethods platform, especially considering the complexity and running costs of maintaining it .

Furthermore, as both companies will have different objectives and constraints, translating into different TOM, application landscapes and IT strategies, the solutions part of their respective integration platform should align with these specificities.

1.6. Challenges

Are there any challenges in developing the product?

Not really.

1.7. Business metrics

How will we measure success?

We  will develop a clear and concise  Assessment matrix, that contains evaluation items that will allow us to deliver a confident recommendations tailored to both companies

1.8. Cybersecurity

Please duplicate this template in this folder. Then, for the envision phase, answerto the initiative card tab and  to the 7 high-level questions in the "Security Scoring" tab. These questions will help the SIP team to determine the level of cybersecurity & compliance support you will need. Please contact the team by email: @SIP_team@solvay.com

The study will be undertaken by involvement of DT platform architect to ensure assessed iPaaS solution is capable to comply with Solvay's Cybersecurity rules

1.9. Up to investment

What is the coherent time to commit on the initiative?*

Estimated Delivery phase start date*

Estimated Delivered end Quarter*

End of Q3 2023

What is the coherent money to commit on the initiative?*

2023 (in K€)* 2024 (in K€)* 2025 (in K€)

Estimated size of investment (high level)

 80

What is the coherent run and build commit on the initiative?

Estimated run costs (estimation high level) - on 10Y (if already known)

1.10. Resources

What skills and talents do we need?

  • Integration Architect (Michaël Opoczynski)
  • Integration Expert (CAPGEMINI - Prateek Bhatnagar)
  • Enterprise Archictect (Thierry Renault)
  • Platform Architect (Jérôme Romain)

1.11. Methodology to apply (refer for Accolade)

Do you think if your initiative is compatible with a waterfall approachor with an agile approach?

  • Agile model
  • Waterfall model
  • I do not know at this stage

If the initiative will be done in Agile methodology, please contact during the strategize phase Nicolas LOVAGNINI

Phase 2: Strategize

Do

  • Identify portfolio epics and epics within each portfolio epics
  • Create a document / slide / spreadsheet to build your epics and put a link in the bief
  • Estimate experts and budget by portfolio epics or by increment
  • Show SMART KPI (Specific, Measureable, Archievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound)
  • Evaluate the impact on Solvay One Planet objectives

Don´t

  • Identify squad resources (naming)
  • Write user stories

Now, we can move on to the Solution space

2.0 Scope / Deliverables
