Some key changes in the safety data sheet should
trigger a major version of the document. They are:
- Section 1 :
- Usages, supplier
- data,
- emergency telephone
- number
- Section 2 :
- Classification
- Section 3:
- Change of the hazardous ingredients present in the product and to be reported on the SDS (new ingredient or classification)
- Section 14:
- Change of product transport classification
- Introduction of a new Exposure Scenario (EU only)
- Change of authorization and/or restriction number in EU versions (S1&S15)
- Regarding Section 15, SDS writers must evaluate if the changes are important enough to be marked as Major.
If it is a major update the reason MUST be described in the section 16 of the SDS.
Generation of a Major version will be identified by an increment of the version number by an integer, e.g.: from 2.3 to 3.0
.
The impact in case of a Major version of the SDS, is that it will trigger for Subsequent SDS shipping in SAP-EHS.

All other
changes without impact on
labeling and does not
require re-issue to former recipients.
Generation of a
minor version will be identified by an increment by a decimal, e.g.: from 2.3 to 2.4
.
With a minor update of the SDS, the document is updated, but this change will not automatically trigger a new SDS shipping for the customers.
Resume of the meaning of the number of the version:
V 1.0 => First version of the document
V 2.3 to V 2.4=> Update of the document with a minor version
V 2.3 to V 3.0=> Update of the document with a Major version
