Sales of batteries for hybrids and electric vehicles hit 1.4 gigawatt-hours worth in the first quarter of 2014 — more than tripling over the last three years.

According to Lux Research and its Automotive Battery Tracker, lithium-ion batteries — which are used in Tesla’s Model S and the Chevy Volt — accounted for 68 percent of all that sold energy storage. Nickel metal hydride batteries took up another 28 percent, thanks to the fact that they’re still used in Toyota’s top-selling Prius hybrid. More advanced solid-state batteries, by contrast, are only making a small dent, at one percent of the market.

In terms of the battery makers, Panasonic has leap-frogged to the front of the pack, thanks to a partnership with Tesla. That’s garnered them 39 percent of the plug-in battery market in terms of energy storage. NEC took 27 percent of the market this past quarter, and LG Chem came in third with 9 percent.

"Even at relatively low volumes — less than 1 percent of all cars sold — plug-in vehicles are driving remarkable energy storage revenues for a few developers, like Panasonic and NEC, that struck the right automotive partnerships,” said Cosmin Laslau, a Lux Research Analyst.

Plug-in vehicles — which include all-electric cars like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla’s Model S, as well as extended-range hybrids like the Chevy Volt — topped out at just over one GWh this past quarter. The rest was taken up by non-plug-in hybrids like the Prius. And while hybrid cars — which combine an electric motor with a gasoline-powered engine — sell the most, their batteries are smaller. Thus they account for a smaller share of the market in terms of energy storage even as they make up a large share of actual cars sold.

This is also good news for the grid and various utilities, which are beginning to rely on used car batteries to supplement their own storage. That said, all-electric and hybrid vehicles still make up an extremely small share of the car market. So battery production will have to massively expand still further to really transform both the transportation sector and the world’s electrical grids.

Boosting that production is one of the goals of Tesla’s upcoming gigafactory. It’s supposed to be up and running within three years, and is anticipated to ultimately double world production of lithium-ion batteries.

The company has also dropped hints it may build a second gigafactory here in the US before all is said and done.

A planned maintenance turnaround is under way at Borealis’ butadiene (BD) production unit at Porvoo, Finland, a company spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday.

While the timing and the duration of the maintenance stop has not been disclosed, talk amongst market players has suggested the downtime will last for around a month  mid-April to mid-May.

The availability of one additional crude C4 (CC4) argo out of Porvoo this month was a signal that BD production was offline, sources added. CC4 is the feedstock for BD.

The unit has the capacity to produce 25,000 tonnes/ year of BD according to ICIS data.

FMC Q1 Results 2014

FMC has announced its financial results for the first quarter of 2014. Turnover in the company’s Agricultural Solutions business segment declined by 5.7% compared to the first quarter of last year to $466.9 million.

Sales in the segment were impacted by persistent cold weather in North America which delayed demand for pre-emergent products. In addition, dry conditions in Brazil depressed production in sugarcane.

Bayer announced on 6 May that it has agreed to acquire the consumer-care business of pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. (Whitehouse Station, NJ), for $14.2 billion in cash. The acquisition will give Bayer the global number-two position in OTC products, behind Johnson & Johnson, Bayer says. Merck’s consumer-care business includes leading brands such as Claritin, Coppertone, and Dr. Scholl’s. Pro forma sales of the combined businesses in 2013 amounted to $7.4 billion, with Merck’s business contributing about $2.2 billion, Bayer says. The transaction is subject to approval from the relevant antitrust authorities, with closing expected in the second half of 2014, Bayer says.

The merged business is to be headquartered at the Bayer site at Whippany, NJ. “This acquisition marks a major milestone on our path towards global leadership in the attractive nonprescription medicines business,” says Marijn Dekkers, CEO of Bayer. The purchase price represents a 2013 pro forma Ebitda multiple of 21, Bayer says. Bayer expects the integration of the businesses to generate cost synergies of about $200 million/year by 2017.

Bayer has declined to comment on reports from late April, prior to the announced deal with Merck, that it is contemplating selling its Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) division. BMS produces polyurethanes and polycarbonate. Bayer has said in the past that it would consider selling BMS to fund a big, pharma-related acquisition.

US producer LyondellBasell has lifted its force majeure on butadiene (BD), market sources said on Thursday, although May deliveries are still subject to allocation.

Sources said LyondellBasell did not address how much BD is being allocated following the announcement, but the company had been on 80% allocation since March.

In a letter dated 20 March, LyondellBasell said that a mechanical failure in its BD extraction facility in Channelview, Texas, was the reason for the force majeure and 75% allocation. The company later raised that percentage.

A company source declined to comment on the operations of the business.

LyondellBasell's BD unit has a capacity of 390,000 tonnes/year, according to ICIS plants and projects.

The Petrochemical Corporation of Singapore (PCS) is expected to commission and commence a test run of its new 100,000 tonne/year butadiene (BD) extraction unit in the first half of May, market sources said on Friday.

It is not clear when the new BD unit will start commercial production as it will depend on the result of the test trial, market sources said.

The new 100,000 tonne/year BD unit is located at Jurong Island, Singapore, where its existing 60,000 tonne/year BD unit is also located.

The company will have a total of 160,000 tonnes/year BD capacity after the startup.

SABIC has shut down its butadiene (BD) unit at Wilton in the UK for planned maintenance, a company source said on Thursday.

The unit, which has the capacity to produce 100,000 tonnes/year of BD according to ICIS data, was taken offline earlier this week.

The maintenance had been planned to coincide with the scheduled turnaround of the nearby 865,000 tonne/year cracker.

Restart of the BD unit and the cracker is expected around 22 June.

SABIC  is due to shut its BD unit at Geleen in the Netherlands for planned maintenance in June, thereby overlapping with the UK outage for a period of about two weeks.
