Before shining on Pyeongchang, the Olympic Flame will travel from Olympia to South Korea in a special aircraft for this occasion. As famous as it is, this open flame Olympic item must comply with the regulations on the transport of dangerous goods by air.

The IATA regulations have covered it all.

Needless to say, in this case an approved packaging cannot be used as it is permanently lit. A special provision (A324) specifies the conditions under which this "symbolic flame" may be carried with the agreement of the countries of origin, destination and the airline.
This UN 1223 - kerosene or UN 3295, hydrocarbons, liquids, n.o.s may be carried by a passenger only as a cabin luggage. For the occasion, a happy "Fire Warden" has the privilege to watch this flame so significantly symbolic for the Olympic Games.

The IATA imposes no less than 8 conditions to make the flight possible:

1- no more than 4 lights on the plane,
2- the flame must contain only the bare minimum of flammable liquid necessary for travel in a leak-proof tank,
3- the lamps are stowed securely,
4- the lamps are under the permanent supervision of an escort who is not a crew member,
5- the lamps can be lit during the trip but not filled on board the aircraft,
6- a fire extinguisher must be near to the person trained to use it,
7- the crew members must be informed verbally about this transport and the Captain must receive a copy of the approval,
8- the sections concerning the proper shipping name, hazard class and packing group and emergency response measures had to be provided to the Captain.
