It enables activities such as spend analysis and forecasts, risk management, opportunity heat maps and environmental reports. This is achieved by using a three-level hierarchy consisting of stream, value chain and product.

Raw materials are grouped under products which have the same molecule but under different grades and/or concentrations and/or packaging. Products are defined by their preferred IUPAC name when possible or their commercial name when not possible. "Product" is the first level of the stream taxonomy.

Streams are the preponderant feedstock type in the manufacturing route of the products. One value chain is associated with one sole stream. There are five streams - Coal, Crude Oil, Gas, Biochemicals, Mineral and Others -.  "Stream" is the third and last level of the stream taxonomy.
