Japan’s Nippon Steel Chemicals plans to start maintenance at its styrene monomer (SM) plants in late January next year, a company source said on Tuesday.

Its 230,000 tonne/year unit in Oita is scheduled to shut in end-January for a catalyst change. The unit is expected to restart on 20 February.

Its 190,000 tonne/year unit, also in Oita, will shut on 25 March to 13 April for around 20 days of maintenance.

Other producers of SM in Japan include Asahi Kasei Chemical, Idemitsu Kosan Co and Denka.
